Ever Lose A Window?

Have you ever wanted to see all of your open windows at once so you can choose one? On a Mac, use F9 (or squeeze in on the sides of the mouse) to activate Expose’. Not only will you be able to see everything on on the desktop, but video and music will continue to play as it happens.

Stop Background Picture Tiling

There are plenty of interesting options in MS Frontpage under Format > Style that will let you change the settings for the html tags. One of the most helpful is the option to stop the background picture from tiling. “Tiling” is when the picture you chose multiplies itself to fill the background. Often this is what you want it to do, but not if you just want one bird and end up with what looks like a horror film.

Go to Format > Style and double click on body in the list to the left. Choose Format > Border, and then the Shading tab. Add the picture if you haven’t before now, and then choose the no-repeat option from the drop down menu.

Web Design Software

I’ve used Frontpage, NVU, and Netscape Composer to teach students how to create websites for their classroooms. Given all the new programs that schools are buying to create sites (such FirstClass and Web Portals), and the popularity of blogging and sites like Myspace, which are much easier forms of web based communication, is it “overkill” to be teaching the more involved programs? I’d like to hear from other technology teachers in higher education as well as teachers who have worked with websites and blogs.

Master Slide in Powerpoint

To keep a consistant background or navigation in a presentation, use the Master Slide under View in the top toolbar. The Master Slide will open with two textboxes that are there only to hold space for information that will change on each slide. So don’t type in the textboxes provided. Instead, move them aside (just as placeholders) and insert pictures, navigation to other slides, or design elements. When you close Master View, you will return to Design View and each slide that you create will have the same background elements in the same place on each slide.
